Day 288 | Week 41 Summary

Week 41 was the week we moved the office to the coffee shops of New York and the week where I, after much resistance, joined foursquare.

Our last visit to New York is what sparked one of the ideas of the products we’re working on with byflock and with similar players entering the market it was time to take a proper look at what one of our non-direct competitors are up to and how they are doing it. Without spilling the beans, as it’s still very different, I’m talking about Foursquare’s Explore functionality. It’s fairly good and very useful for walking around the streets wondering where to go for that coffee that you’re in much need of. Or waffles (we ate a lot of waffles). It was great to use and sparked a few ideas of changes and focus for our own product.

Then, of course, I got caught in the game mechanics of logging where we’d been and to collect points (very easy to collect lots of points when you start using it in a different country and haven’t added a lot of friends) and beating high scores of the very few friends I’ve so far added. And with a few more trips coming up in the next three weeks I’ll most likely keep using it adding points and badges to my stats, like the one below which I got from visiting the very lovely and absolutely delicious coffee shop Prodigy coffee which was right on our doorstep.

Unlocking the local badge on Foursquare

That badge is, of course, also a proof of us accomplishing the more local feel that we wanted to get out of our week in New York. We’re definitely going to miss being in the West Village and our friends over in New York, but it’s still nice to be home and to be in our own bed again. Nothing, after all beats that.
