Public speaking

Talks & workshops

I sort of fell into public speaking by accident in 2011. Since then, I’ve spoken and given workshops at a close to 60 conferences and meet-ups around the world such as SXSW, Web Summit and UX London as well as given internal keynotes. I’ve also been an instructor at General Assembly in London and taught just under 50 classes related to designing for multiple devices. You can see where I’ve spoken at the bottom of this page.

Since 2019 I’ve mostly taken a break, mainly due to caring for little ones. As they’ve grown bigger I’m now able to travel more and would love to come talk or run workshops related to storytelling and AI at your conference or event.

Topics I like to talk about

Below you find my most popular topics for talks, workshops and training, though most things I write about I also love to talk about. The descriptions below are generic and the topics can be tailored in format as well as to different audiences. From designers and product owners, to developers, strategists, HR, leadership, and entire teams.

New topic!

When AI Does the Work, Storytelling Becomes the Work

As AI tools and agents take over more of the doing – writing, analysing, creating and even decision making – what we as humans bring to the table is changing. It’s no longer just about being efficient or clever with our tools. It’s about the layer we add on top, the connection, the context, the story.

In this session, we’ll look at why storytelling is becoming one of the most important skills we can cultivate in an AI-driven world. Not just to stand out and future proof our place at work, but to make what we create matter, to others and to ourselves.

Storytelling In Design

To every great story there’s a bit of magic involved and so there is to products and services that just work and deliver the right content, interactions and notifications at the right time, and on the right device.

Drawing on tried and tested storytelling principles from film and fiction and applying them to the context of UX, product and business, in this talk Anna shares how we can use storytelling to instil a bit of magic in the products and services we create, thereby ensuring we create better experiences that move users into action and healthier bottom lines for the business.

Using Storytelling For Organisational Impact

Have you ever given a presentation or held a meeting at work that didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to? Perhaps someone interrupted you early on and derailed the rest of the meeting, or changed the scope and direction resulting in that you didn’t get to present your recommendations and your full work? Or perhaps you know that you lack a good structure and framework that will make you feel confident and in control, no matter what you present, who you present to, and how tricky they may be.

If that sounds familiar, this session is for you. Drawing on tried and tested storytelling principles and methods from film, fiction–and the greatest presenters–and applying them to a work context, this session will change how you approach, create and give presentations and meetings. You’ll learn the three key pillars that lay at the heart of creating and delivering impactful presentations that move people into action and have a practical framework that you can apply the very same day.

How To Use Storytelling To Advance Your Career

There is a quote by Carl Jung that goes “The world will ask who you are, and if you don’t know, the world will tell you”. In this practical session we’ll look at the importance of storytelling in relation to what you do professionally and how stortytelling can help you present and sell what you do in a more efficient and better way. We’ll cover why you need to create a story around yourself, how to do it, and why you really need to own it to succeed and advance your career.

Where I've spoken & given workshops

Some of the conferences and meet-ups I’ve spoken and given workshops at are: SXSW, UX Lisbon, Generate London, UX London, Euro IA, Websummit, MOBX, Reasons:London, Webbdagarna, UX Ireland, CXL Live, inOrbit, Agile Scotland, DXN Nottingham, Funkas Tillgänglighetsdagar, Amuse, Conversion Hotel, Mobile UX London, UX In The City Oxford, Geek Girl, UCD, ClickSummit, Design & Banter, Bulgaria Websummit, UX Lausanne, Digital Dumbo, and Cambridge Usability Group.

What my talks & workshops are like

I grew up in a family where stories were always told and that’s how I approach both speaking and running workshops.

Time is one of our most valuable resources and when someone has given me their attention, I do my utter most to give something valuable and memorable back. And I make it easy for you, the organiser, to trust that I deliver what you need, on time.

My sessions, whether workshops or talks, tend to be full and even oversubscribed. At SXSW I was asked to do an extra sessions related to my book and we still had to turn people away.
