Day 319 | I don’t need to work less. I need to play more

Every now and then I get the well meant comment that I should work less. I couldn’t agree more but not necessarily in the way that the comments are meant. The thing is that I don’t need to work less hours. I need to shift what I use those hours on.

As much as I (mostly) enjoy the day job there is no denying that did I not need it in order to pay the bills, I would take time off and work on byflock and our products. Juggling byflock with the day job and running a freelance business… Well it fills up the week. Though the actual hours I do per week at times pile up, generally the number of hours I do are ok (honestly). It’s what I do with those hours that I need to change.

Confucius ones said:

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

I’ve found what I love and I’m already doing it. However, with byflock I’ve found something I love even more and that means that my goal post has moved. The day job does feel like work sometimes because what I really want to do is work on setting up byflock and building our products. Whilst I’m still juggling a day job, anything I do on byflock is outside of normal office hours and effectively eats part of my spare time. But the thing is that I don’t mind that so much. I want to create my own future and I don’t mind giving up some of my free time to do so. In fact I love what I do so much that I’m more than happy to swap out relaxing in front of the TV for working for 4 hours after I come home from work every now and then. Or to get up an hour earlier a few times a week, make myself a nice breakfast, a fresh cup of coffee and sit in my robe working away as the sun rises and the city around me wakes up. I love what I do and I love what we’ve started. It is my passion and my hobby. It’s my play time. And that is what I need to shift more of my time on – byflock play time.
