When You Think Something Will Fly

Sometimes you have an idea, venture, or belief and think “This is going to fly.” And sometimes that turns out not to be true. Quite literally.

This morning, I sat down and chatted with a founder of many things for the UX Fika podcast. We had some very honest conversations about starting your own business and what it takes to keep going when there are no guarantees.

That conversation happened shortly after my daughters and I saved a little bird from our cat.

At first, we thought she was doing well enough to be let out on her own, as she seemed strong and flew into a bush. So we left her there and went inside to have breakfast.
Just before drop off, our cat caught her a second time. We rescued her a second time and put her somewhere safe and well away from our cat, to rest and recover.

Well, Pip Pip, or Eevie, as the girls called her, didn’t make it.

Most of the time, things luckily aren’t as serious as that in business, but there’s a lesson in there.

Sometimes you have the strongest belief that everything will be okay, that an idea, direction, or new business venture will work. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to try by letting it out into the world. But sometimes not rushing is the way forward.

Knowing when to pursue something, let it out, and when to wait, or even let go, that’s a skill on its own, partly learnt from experience. It’s one that even more people will have to learn in the future as AI enables more people to start businessesw where the barrier before has been too high.

As for little Pip Pip, or Eevie, we should have kept her safe for a bit longer before we let her back out the first time.
Lesson learned the hard way, which, as I also talked about with the founder this morning, is part of it. Life and business.

RIP little Pip Pip Eevie 💔 😭
