Talks & workshops

I grew up in a family where stories were always told and that’s how I approach both speaking and running workshops. Time is one of our most valuable resources and when someone has given me their attention, I do my utter most to give something valuable and memorable back.

I’ve been presenting to senior clients and internal teams since I started my career back in 2001. Since September 2011 I’ve gone into public speaking and spoken both at large conferences, smaller meet-ups and at in house seminars. I’ve been an instructor with General Assembly since they opened in London in 2012 and whilst I take on the occasional freelance work, my main focus is on running workshops, mentoring and coaching, as well as carrying out in house training in all UX related matters. I’m also writing a book for O’Reilly about Storytelling in Design, which is available for early release.

Carefully crafted, carefully told

Whether I present work, run a workshop or do a talk I pay careful attention to the story I tell and how it’s told. Stories are something we can all relate to. They help us learn, remember and put things in perspective. It’s a craft that takes practice, both with how you structure the story and what you use to tell it.

My slides are very visual. They are there to support the message rather than steal the attention of the audience by having too much text on them. And they often have a sense of humour. A little something extra to make people smile and remember the session by whilst still being informative. Perhaps that’s why I’ve been top presentation of the day with Slideshare 8 times and been amongst the top 1% of most viewed on Slideshare.
For bespoke workshops I provide a write up of notes and useful links to make sure you get as much out of it as possible.

What I teach and talk about

Each talk or workshop I give is about a topic that lies close to my heart and that I work with on an everyday basis. Some of the topics I’ve previously talked and run workshops about are:

    • the role and value of IA/ UX and how to incorporate it into an organisation
    • how to tackle and design for multiple devices
    • understanding your product life cycle and how to use it as a strategic UX tool
    • getting buy-in for UX
    • tools for applying storytelling in design
    • how we can create brilliantly curated experiences with the use of data
    • tailored experiences and how to design for the individual
    • best practice of UX deliverables and how to present your work

Everything I write about on my blog are topics I’m very passionate about and if there is something that catches your attention, I’d love to discuss it with you.
I’m also in the process of getting UX fika off the ground, a range of practical, hands on learning session in inspiring places. To stay up to date I’ve created a page and there’s a twitter account under @UXFika where I’ll share the latest news and useful UX related links.
